Dell Laser Consultants is Among the First in Texas to offer the RxSight(TM) Light Adjustable Lens to Patients
AUSTIN, Texas, Feb. 25, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Renowned eye surgical practice led by Steven J. Dell, MD, Dell Laser Consultants is among the first practices in Texas to offer the FDA-approved, post-surgical, corrective Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) by RxSight(TM). Since offering this technology in November 2019, nearly 100 LAL implants have been placed with excellent results. Dell Laser Consultants is also currently involved in the latest LAL FDA study.
The RxSight(TM) LAL is the first intraocular lens (IOL) that allows adjustments following cataract surgery, the first and only FDA-approved IOL of this nature. Before this technology, the refractive accuracy, which affects post-op visual outcomes, could not be precisely targeted, despite preoperative measurements and calculations. The LAL is a three-piece foldable design that is implanted just like a monofocal lens implant. A monofocal lens is a standard lens implant, which is typically covered by most insurance companies, such as Medicare. Unlike monofocal lenses, the Light Adjustable Lens is made with a special photoreactive silicone, which allows surgeons to adjust the prescription after implantation by using an advanced Ultra-Violet (UV) light.
Cataracts occur when the eye's natural lens becomes clouded, most commonly the result of aging. While cataracts are one of the leading causes of blindness, the removal of cataracts is one of the safest and most common surgical procedures around in the world today. The Light Adjustable Lens technology in cataract surgery helps improve visual outcomes by allowing surgeons to make adjustments to the lens after the cataract is removed and the LAL is implanted.
"In the past, it could be difficult to get precise pre-operative measurements on patients that had previous refractive surgery such as LASIK or PRK. Now, we have the ability to fine-tune a patient's visual results after surgery. This gives the patient the choice to correct both eyes for distance or correct the non-dominant eye for up-close vision, resulting in a more precise form of monovision. This level of precision has not been achievable until now, by using the Light Adjustable Lens," said Dr. Steven J. Dell, Medical Director of Dell Laser Consultants.
In an FDA study which included 600 patients, those who received the LAL were twice as likely to achieve 20/20 vision without glasses, compared to those who received a standard monofocal lens.
"This technology has allowed us to offer exceptional visual results to patients that previously had to settle for lesser vision," said Dr. Derek N. Cunningham, Director or Optometry at Dell Laser Consultants.
The ideal candidates for Light Adjustable Lens implants are patients that are concerned about their best possible distance vision, a patient wanting monovision, or patients with a history of corneal surgery including LASIK, PRK, or RK for irregular corneas.
