Maine Architect Receives New England Home's 5 Under 40 Award

PORTLAND, Maine, April 9, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Associate Principal Jessie Carroll of Whitten Architects, a residential architectural firm with a 30-plus year history of excellence in Maine, was selected as one of the top 5 Under 40 design professionals in New England by New England Home magazine.

New England Home's 5 Under 40 Awards spotlight emerging talents in New England in several residential design categories: architecture, interiors, specialty design (furniture, textiles, lighting, accessories, and other home products), and landscape design. Carroll is the first woman in Maine to receive this award in the category of architecture.

This year's independent judges--interior designer Michelle Morgan Harrison of Morgan Harrison Home, architect Tom Catalano of Tom Catalano Architects, and landscape architect John Haven of LeBlanc Jones--commended all of this year's inductees for the creativity and innovation they are adding to the design landscape across New England and beyond.

"As Associate Principal of Whitten Architects, I serve as the youngest woman to hold a leadership role in the firm's history -- and with this 5 Under 40 title, I am the first female architect from Maine to be selected. Women in leadership positions within the architectural field are a rarity, so it's an incredible honor to be recognized as someone who is changing that standard and paving the way for others." -- Jessie Carroll

The 11th Annual 5 Under 40 Awards will take place on September 17, 2020 celebrating the 2020 awardees. Profiles of the 2020 winners will appear in a special magazine section in the September/October 2020 issue of New England Home, as a prelude to the awards celebration on September 17.

In celebration of 5 Under 40, awardees were asked to design custom rugs, which have been handwoven in Nepal by weavers from Landry & Acari and will be auctioned off for charity at the September 17 celebration at the Landry & Arcari showroom in Boston, Massachusetts.

All proceeds from the auction will benefit Barakat, Inc., a Cambridge, Massachusetts based charity that works to strengthen education and literacy in Central and South Asia.

About "Levity" custom rug design:

"There is gravity to being an architect, creating works that will grace our planet longer than my own lifetime. To create timeless spaces that honor its context and reflect its owners. There is quietness and ease I seek in that highly considered effort with my team at Whitten Architects. The opportunity to design a rug with Landry & Arcari was a moment of sheer levity. Where color and texture could evoke path, depth, directionality, space, and time. I designed a statement piece meant to hold a gaze, and with a familiar palette, inspire nostalgia. As a recipient of 5 under 40 I say, "define your path, and blaze it." -- Jessie Carroll

Since 1986, Whitten Architects has been designing thoughtfully considered homes in New England. With a focus exclusively on residential design, the firm excels in a variety of project types -- from camps to cottages, new homes to historic renovations. "Jessie's leadership, passion for design, and ability to connect with her clients, builders, and peers have made her an invaluable member of our team. This is a well deserved award and we're excited that what we've come to appreciate about her is now also recognized outside our office.
