New Research from EMA Indicates Increased Demand for Managed Threat Detection and Response (MDR) Services
BOULDER, Colo., May 12, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Enterprise Management Associates (EMA(TM)), a leading IT and data management research and consulting firm, released a new research report titled "Managed Detection and Response: Selective Outsourcing for Understaffed SOCs and the Platforms That Enable MDR Services" based on criteria defined by Paula Musich, research director of security and risk management at EMA.
The success bad actors are seeing in bypassing existing defenses, along with the complexity and overhead associated with hunting down threats within enterprise infrastructure, are spurring the fast growth of the managed detection and response market. Organizations of different sizes actively investigate adding such services to either offload that function from overburdened in-house staff or fill in gaps that exist in their current information security operations.
For large enterprises, MDR providers offer the opportunity to augment existing security operations outside of normal business hours. For smaller organizations, those service providers most often completely outsource the threat detection and response function. However, several issues drive interest in MDR services. Those issues include the fact that in-house security personnel are overwhelmed with the number of security layers or tools they have to manage and organizations want to free up in-house security experts to focus on proactive security activities, as reported respectively by 41% and 34% of those looking into MDR services.
"Most security professionals acknowledge that the enterprise networks they are charged with defending are already compromised, but finding the most threatening attacks and shutting them down quickly is no easy task," said Musich. "Sophisticated technologies and processes designed to speed detection are best used by experienced threat hunters that are in extremely short supply. This combination of factors is fueling great interest in managed detection and response services."
In this new research project, EMA sought to better understand the attitudes among IT professionals about MDR's value and place in their security program, as well as gain a deeper understanding about what prompts organizations to build out their own detection and response operation rather than outsource it, which selection criteria are most critical in choosing a provider, and how much control customers are willing to give up in outsourcing that function.
