National society of collegiate scholars announces the mental health advocate award

WASHINGTON, May 14, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS), the nation's premiere collegiate honor society for first-and-second year college students, today announced the launch of its Active Minds Mental Health Advocate Award. The scholarship will be made possible by the Society's partnership with Active Minds, the leading non-profit organization that empowers students to speak openly about mental health. Recipients will receive $1,000 and there will be five individuals chosen.

"Students nationwide are struggling, especially our high-academic achievers who put a tremendous amount of pressure on themselves to excel and always go above and beyond," said Scott Mobley, executive director of NSCS. "Because this need to excel may often come at the expense of our students' health, NSCS launched its national partnership with Active Minds in 2018 to help educate, inform and provide resources for students coping with this pressure."

Requirements to apply include having a 3.0 GPA or higher, being an NSCS member and demonstrated experience in one or more of the following: promoting mental wellness, combating mental health stigma, or organizing mental health programs and advocacy efforts on their campus. Applicants must also provide a 450-600 word written explanation as to why they feel mental health is a topic that college students need to learn more about, and provide another written piece describing what they have done to raise awareness or lead advocacy efforts related to mental health, help-seeking, and/or stigma reduction on their campus.

"Through our ongoing partnership with Active Minds, we hope that the sharing of resources and information will enable our students to shift the conversation on mental health. We are in a unique position to impact first-and second-year high-achieving students, who have a greater likelihood of experiencing anxiety, stress and depression."
