Nova Scotia-based ESL Labs Inaugurates $10M Facility Upgrades with a Visit from Premier Tim Houston

Nova Scotia-based ESL Labs, Canada’s best-equipped environmental and EMI/EMC test facility and subsidiary of J-Squared Technologies Inc., commemorated a multiyear, $10M upgrade with a visit from Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston. Houston’s July 10th tour of the sprawling 30,000 sq. ft. Dartmouth facility and new infrastructure is a testament to the significance of the investment to the region and to Canadian military testing.

The new installations include a Medium Weight Shock Machine (MWSM)—one of only two in Canada and 19 worldwide—and a Walk-In Salt Cyclic and SO2 Corrosion Test Chamber used for testing above-deck items on warships and commercial vessels. The MWSM enables shock testing for shipboard machinery, equipment, systems, and structures, verifying the ability of shipboard installations to withstand the effects of nuclear or conventional weapons. Other significant new equipment includes a Lage Base Motion Simulator to accommodate ship motion pitch testing, roll, heel and trim and other tests up to Sea State 6 (vessel moving through 4-6 metre waves), as well as a large Blowing Sand and Dust Simulator.

The new infrastructure enables the MIL-STD certified test lab to conduct more comprehensive and large-scale testing for military installations including the River Class Destroyer program and other marine and defence products and systems.
