Switched Source Furthers Commercial Readiness With Georgia Phase-EQ™ Installation
As the U.S. prioritizes reliable grid infrastructure and affordable energy, the need for cost-efficient grid solutions has never been greater. Switched Source, a leading developer of grid-enhancing technologies, today announced the successful deployment of its Phase-EQ technology in Macon, Ga. Southern Company, through its subsidiary Georgia Power, served as an early demonstration partner, offering site access, engineering input, and operational data to evaluate the technology under field conditions. The Phase-EQ is designed to help utilities increase usable capacity from existing power lines by up to twenty percent by balancing electricity and improving reliability.

Utility and project partners recently visited the Macon site to see the Phase-EQ installation firsthand.
“Utilities are feeling the demands of growing energy needs, and alternative solutions present options to enhance affordability,” said Charles Murray, co-founder and President of Switched Source. “Our work with ARPA-E and Georgia Power in Macon shows that there is a cost-effective alternative in new technology that can boost capacity and reliability using the grid that’s already in place.”
Southern Company’s research and development organization has worked closely with Switched Source to refine and test the Phase-EQ prior to deployment. The installation is already showing promising results, with Georgia Power providing substation-level data to help track device performance. Initial feedback indicates that the unit is running smoothly, with stakeholders eager to see it operate across various operating modes and conditions. The project is modeled to decrease load imbalance by half and voltage imbalance by more than thirty percent.
“This deployment represents Georgia Power’s continued efforts to partner with industry and use new technologies to improve grid performance while reducing costs for our customers,” said Robin Lanier, director of grid strategy and solutions at Georgia Power. “We have collaborated with Switched Source and ARPA-E to develop this Phase-EQ device, and we are now working to determine its effectiveness under real-world conditions. This testing will allow us to decide if more devices could be useful on other distribution lines in our service territory.”
Since its founding in 2016, Switched Source has pioneered technology that enables electric utilities to enhance reliability, unlock latent capacity, and support growing energy demands, often allowing them to delay or offset infrastructure investments. The Phase-EQ acts like a controllable gateway on the distribution grid, dynamically balancing power between phases. The device mitigates congestion, improves power quality, and is a rapidly deployable alternative to traditional upgrades such as reconductoring or substation builds. Switched Source is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) through its SCALEUP program, which funded the company’s early technology development.
