In 2008, GE Aviation acquired certain assets of Walter Engines, a Czech Republic-based manufacturer of small turboprop engines and high-precision machined aviation parts with a long history dating back to 1911.

Renamed Business and General Aviation (BGA) Turboprops, the company has produced more than 37,000 aircraft engines for more than 85 years. Its most successful commercial engine family is the M601 turboprop engine, which has more than 1,600 engines installed on more than 30 aircraft types. With more than 17 million flight hours, the M601 engine has a proven legacy of performance and reliability in some of the most rugged, severe environments.

BGA Turboprops has integrated GE Aviation's vast technical, commercial and managerial expertise into its business operations and developed a new engine offering, the H80 engine. The H80 engine combines the robust turboprop design of the M601 with GE Aviation's modern 3D aerodynamic design techniques with advanced material to create a more powerful, fuel-efficient, durable turboprop engine with significantly enhanced high altitude and hot-day performance.

As a part of GE Aviation, BGA Turboprops has access to the vast resources of experienced technical, manufacturing, quality, logistics, training, publications, warranty, field service and engine services personnel to support airframe OEM and customer needs. This broad array of engineering & manufacturing resources, global talent pool, customer support, service locations and comprehensive product lines make GE Aviation and BGA Turboprops uniquely capable of delivering engines and engine support services around the world.

GE M601 TURBO PROP ENGINE

The GE M601 is a light-weight, reliable turboprop engine developed for use in general aviation and utility aircraft. The M601 consists of a reverse flow gas generator and a power section arranged in tandem. The gas generator is referred to as reverse flow because the air enters an inlet at the rear of the engine and flows forward through the gas generator in reverse of the aircraft’s flight path.

The gas generator section includes the compressor module, combustor and high pressure turbine module. The gas generator section produces the energy necessary to maintain combustion, power the accessory gearbox and drive the power section of the engine with exhaust gasses.

The power section includes a free turbine that harnesses the remaining energy from the gas generator gasses and provides power to the propeller gearbox via the power turbine drive shaft. The power section also transmits the exhaust gasses to the atmosphere via exhaust nozzles, providing additional jet thrust for the aircraft.
