In April of 1979, FBM or Fabrica Boliviana de Municiones (in other words the "Bolivian Ammunition Factory") was founded by a state investment of some $6.5 million and with the participation of the French firm MANURHIN, a supplier of ammunition manufacturing equipment. The production site of the company is located in the military district of Cotapachi, in the same area as MAXAM-FANEXA and the Central Army Arsenal, thus establishing a cluster of high strategic value for the country.
The initial purpose for establishing the company, was to provide the Bolivian Armed Forces with the necessary ammunition for the two predominant ammunition calibres, of both long and short firearms. Later this role was expanded to encompass the import of arms and ammunition to cover local demand.
FABRICA BOLIVIANA DE MUNICION develops small caliber ammunition and small arms and is considered a leading company in the sector, as well as the technical body of the Armed Forces of Bolivia specialising in weapons, personal protection equipment, chemical agents and ammunition.
