Direct Energy Offers New Solutions for Customers to Control Energy Use

HOUSTON, Sept. 19, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Imagine the number of times you've left your house wondering if you turned off the lights or an iron. Now, imagine having the ability to not only turn plugged in appliances and electronics on and off remotely, but also to control their usage from anywhere. Direct Energy®, one of North America's largest retail providers of electricity, natural gas, and home and business energy-related services, today announced it will be offering new Hive smart home solutions and services to customers through its collaboration with sister company Centrica Connected Home.

New Direct Energy customers will now have the opportunity to sign up for "Connect to Control 24," and receive the Hive Welcome Home Starter Plan, including a Hive Hub, two Hive Active Lights, one Hive Active Plug, and two Hive Window or Door Sensors with a qualifying 24-month electricity and/or natural gas plan.

Designed to make the smart home accessible for all, the Hive Welcome Home Starter Plan is easy to set up and enables users to look after their lighting and appliances from their smartphone. Customers can be sure, after a hectic morning, that they've left the house with appliances connected to a Hive Active Plug switched off, or can schedule lights to turn on before arriving at their front doorstep for the perfect welcome home.

"Direct Energy is excited to offer customers a simple way to manage their lives efficiently with the latest smart home technology," said Dung Tran, Head of Retail Energy, Home Protection and Solar at Direct Energy. "Through the Hive connected home experience, customers will be able to conveniently manage their homes and their energy use."

Connected Home is a key area for growth for parent company Centrica plc, with a £500m investment to take the Hive brand multi-market. With over half a million customers in the UK, the Hive experience is a leading smart home solution, with more than half of customers using their Hive Active Thermostat at least once daily in the winter, and 75 percent of customers recommending it to others.

This new offer is part of the Direct Energy promise to help customers "use less energy." This approach gives customers the ability to better manage their energy consumption in a way that could help lower their monthly energy costs.

Earlier this year, Direct Energy announced its Connect to Comfort 24 Plan, providing price stability for customers and the energy-saving benefits of the Hive Heating and Cooling Plan. Both Connect to Comfort 24 and Connect to Control 24 are available to all new U.S. customers.
