AT&T Launches Fixed Wireless Internet in Alabama to Enhance Connectivity in Rural and Underserved Areas

MONTGOMERY, Ala., Nov. 16, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T* Fixed Wireless Internet(1) is now available in rural and underserved locations in parts of 27 counties in Alabama.

In June 2017, AT&T launched Fixed Wireless Internet, an innovative service that delivers an internet connection with download speeds of at least 10Mbps to homes and small businesses. With Fixed Wireless Internet, customers can download, surf and stream their favorite movies or television shows. The connection comes from a wireless tower to a fixed antenna on customers' homes or businesses. This is an efficient way to deliver high-quality internet to customers in rural and underserved areas.

Parts of the following 27 counties in Alabama are now eligible for Fixed Wireless Internet service from AT&T: Autauga, Barbour, Bibb, Blount, Butler, Chambers, Chilton, Coosa, Cullman, Elmore, Greene, Hale, Jefferson, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Lowndes, Macon, Montgomery, Morgan, Shelby, Sumter, Talladega, Tallapoosa, Tuscaloosa, Walker and Winston.

"In today's economy, access to high-speed internet is an integral part of our infrastructure foundation," said Alabama Governor Kay Ivey. "I am excited to see AT&T's continued investment and innovation bringing enhanced connectivity to rural communities across Alabama. Every day we are letting the world know Alabama is open for business."

AT&T has extended Fixed Wireless Internet as part of its FCC Connect America Fund commitment to help rural and underserved areas. As a part of this rollout, AT&T plans to reach over 400,000 locations nationwide by the end of 2017, and over 1.1 million locations nationwide by 2020. And, in Alabama, AT&T plans to reach over 26,000 locations by end of 2017, and nearly 66,000 locations with this technology across Alabama by 2020.

"The more than 5,200 men and women who work for AT&T and call Alabama home are proud to work with our local, state and federal leadership to provide the connectivity Alabama's residents and businesses demand," said Wayne Hutchens, AT&T Alabama assistant vice president of external and legislative affairs. "Through this innovative service, we are helping close the connectivity gap in Alabama."

"I am thankful for the leadership of our elected officials who work to ensure a pro-consumer business environment and am delighted many rural residents in parts of over 25 Alabama counties already have access to this innovative technology," said Phillis Belcher, executive director of Greene County Industrial Development Authority.
