Otis Elevator Korea Awarded Elevator World's New Construction Project of the Year
SEOUL, South Korea, Jan. 11, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Otis Elevator Korea has received Elevator World's 2018 Project of the Year Award in the "Elevators, New Construction" category for its installation in the 555-meter Lotte World Tower in Seoul, featuring the world's longest double-deck elevator. The total installation includes 30 elevators - 11 Skyrise® units (including two double-decks) and 19 Gen2® elevators - as well as 19 escalators in the country's tallest vertical structure. Otis is a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).
The "Sky Shuttle" double-deck elevator runs 496 meters from the second basement to the tower's 121(st) floor observation deck. Utilizing a single hoist way, the elevator can transport 54 passengers to the top in one minute. Double-deck refers to an elevator with two cabins - one on top of the other - traveling in a single shaft for increased capacity. Otis installed the world's first double-deck elevator in New York City in 1931.

The tower's double-deck elevators not only travel farther than any other elevator in the world, but also faster, at a speed of 10 meters per second, or 600 meters per minute. As a result, in January 2017 the building was recognized by Guinness World Records for having the longest traveling and fastest (with the largest load) double-deck elevators in the world.
Double-deck passengers also enjoy a unique ride experience powered by Seoul Sky as 60, 55-inch OLED signage screens, created by LG Electronics, cover the entire elevator interior surface, providing images of Seoul's past and present history and landmarks. Otis provided software technology to synchronize digital content with the elevator controls at precise timing.
To install the two double-deck elevators, as well as two single-deck elevators for emergency use, the company lifted and placed four traction machines, each weighing 21.6 tons, into the machine room at the top of the skyscraper. It also used a multi-modular elevator installation approach, a first for South Korea, reducing construction and installation time by a factor of 2 ½ times.
It's common for buildings 100 stories or taller to sway in high winds or an earthquake. To counteract that phenomenon, The Lotte World Tower's double-deck elevators feature a cutting-edge "building sway" system specially customized with internal sensors to withstand sway effects while ensuring maximum safety.
