PreVeil Founder and CTO Raluca Ada Popa Wins a 2018 Sloan Research Fellowship in Computer Science

BOSTON, Feb. 26, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- PreVeil, a data security company founded on the idea that hackers cannot steal what they cannot see, announces that its Chief Technology Officer, Raluca Ada Popa, has been named a winner of a 2018 Sloan Research Fellowship. Popa, part of the founding team of PreVeil and one of the developers of its proprietary suite of encrypted email and file sharing for enterprises, won the Fellowship for her work at the University of California at Berkeley, where she is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science.

Per the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Popa was chosen as one of 126 early-career scholars out of 800+ nominees from 191 institutions in winning the Fellowship. She and her fellow winners represent the most promising scientific researchers working today. Their achievements and potential place them among the next generation of scientific leaders in the U.S. and Canada.

Available to tenure track faculty in eight scientific fields, the Fellowships are awarded at a key moment in a researcher's career. Foundation President Adam Falk, who received a Sloan Research Fellowship in physics in 1995, can attest to their significance. "As a former #SloanFellow, I know firsthand how catalytic this award can be. The Fellowship is an unmistakable marker of quality that makes a young researcher stand out. A Sloan Research Fellow is a scientist to watch."

Popa is a co-founder of the RISELab at UC Berkeley, where she focuses on computer security. She is trying to develop a learning and analytics framework that can run on encrypted data. This would let organizations that are not allowed to share data conduct useful medical or financial studies on the combined data, which is not possible today. Even though researchers would not be able to read the encrypted data, such as confidential patient records, they could still learn from the larger data set and, for example, discover better cancer treatment predictors.(1)

Popa has developed practical systems that protect data confidentiality by computing over encrypted data as well as designed novel encryption schemes. She received her PhD in computer security as well as two BS degrees, in computer science and in mathematics, from MIT. In addition to the 2018 Sloan Research Fellowship, she is the recipient of an Intel Early Career Faculty Honor award, George M. Sprowls Award for best MIT CS doctoral thesis, a Google PhD Fellowship, a Johnson award for best CS Masters of Engineering thesis from MIT, and a CRA Outstanding undergraduate award from the ACM.

The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation is a philanthropic, not-for-profit grant-making institution based in New York City, established in 1934 by Alfred Pritchard Sloan Jr., then-president and chief executive officer of the General Motors Corporation.
