Fordham Graduate School of Education Offers Innovative New Online Program For Master of Science in Teaching

Educators in Diverse Regions Can Earn Specialized Degrees in Childhood Education and Special Education

NEW YORK, March 21, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Fordham University's Graduate School of Education (GSE) today announced that its new online Master of Science in Teaching (M.S.T.) program offering specialized degrees in Childhood Education and Childhood Special Education is now accepting applications. Beginning May 2018, educators seeking their initial teacher certification can earn a prestigious Fordham degree from home or anywhere in the country and on their own schedule through Fordham's new innovative and immersive digital education platform.

"This new innovative online education program provides more equity and access to those who are not able to attend Fordham's campus programs," Fordham University Graduate School of Education Dean Virginia Roach said. "Based in New York City, and having played a role in educating many of our region's educational leaders, Fordham has the technology, resources, and expertise to deliver high-quality online education in response to the need to prepare more adept teachers in New York and throughout the country. Our goal is to equip Fordham graduates to be forces of positive change with their students, in their schools, and in their communities."

The U.S. Department of Education* reports a shortage of teachers for childhood education in New York City public schools, and a shortage of special education teachers in 46 states and the District of Columbia. With this new, rigorous online degree, Fordham aims to train more highly-qualified educators to help tackle the shortfall.

As a Jesuit university that values acceptance, compassion, understanding, and the education and care of the whole person, students enrolled in the online M.S.T. program will focus on approaches that consider the emotional, as well as the academic, growth of the whole child. Graduates will complete the program prepared to teach students with a range of academic, social, and emotional abilities and from a variety of backgrounds.

The online Master of Science in Teaching (M.S.T.):

-- Childhood Education Track: For aspiring teachers who want to work with
elementary-school-age children. Students complete a curriculum exploring
child development, instructional practices for inclusive elementary
classrooms, and professional studies. This track comprises 36 credit
hours and can be completed in two years. Successful completion leads to
initial teacher licensure in the state of New York.
-- Childhood Special Education Track: A dual-certificate degree that
prepares educators to teach children with disabilities in grades 1-6.
Classes and coursework blend instruction in child development, adaptive
instructional practices for children in all settings, and professional
studies. At 45 credit hours, this track can be completed in just over
two years. Successful completion of this degree leads to an endorsement
for the New York state teacher certification as a childhood teacher and
teacher of children with disabilities in childhood education.

The M.S.T. program will match the rigor and quality of Fordham's on-campus programs with weekly live online classes taught by GSE faculty. For both tracks, students will also complete in-person field experiences, in which they will apply classroom learning to their local communities (on-site mentor teachers and GSE faculty members will guide and support M.S.T. students' work). Upon graduation from this program, students will be eligible to sit for licensure exams in New York and may also be eligible for licensure in other states.

The first application deadline is March 26, 2018. The first student cohort begins classes in May 2018. Visit gseonline.fordham.edu for more information and application requirements, or contact an admissions counselor at admissions@gseonline.fordham.edu or 855-859-4851.

The M.S.T. degree is part of the Education@Fordham program, which is delivered in partnership with 2U, Inc. 2U also works with Fordham University's Graduate School of Social Service to deliver OnlineMSW@Fordham.
