Long Island IT Consulting Firm, Server Bays, Shares 4 Common Types of Cyber Attacks that Businesses Should Prepare For

PATCHOGUE, N.Y., May 4, 2018 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- While cybersecurity threats remain extremely prevalent in our internet driven world, education and awareness can be effective tactics in the prevention of cyber-attacks. Provider of managed services on Long Island, Server Bays, shares 4 common types of cyber-attacks that businesses should keep an eye out for.

DOS Attacks: A denial of service (DOS) attack will disrupt a network until it is over capacity and can no longer function. The most common version of DOS attacks involves a cyber-criminal using multiple computers to send a level of traffic or data that will disrupt the system and render it useless.

To prevent a DOS attack, make sure that your systems and software are up to date. Regular back-ups to a separate server can also ensure that access to your files and programs is never lost. Your Managed Services Provider (MSP) can also monitor your traffic and data regularly to identify any unusual or threatening spikes in activity.

Malware Attacks: Malware is a catchall phrase for a program or code with malicious intent that will typically steal data or destroy something like information or files on a computer. This can include viruses, worms, Trojan horses, ransomware, spyware and more. Most frequently, malware attacks take place via email attachments, downloads, or vulnerabilities in your operating system.

The most effective way to prevent against malware attacks is to avoid clicking on links or downloads from unknown sources; however, it is important to also avoid operating system vulnerabilities with regular software and program updates. Your MSP can complete these regularly scheduled updates and suggest a robust firewall for added protection.

Phishing: In phishing attacks, a user is directed to a dummy page (typically by an email link) that will steal their personal information. In some cases, phishing attacks have gotten so advanced that a user does not need to enter any of their information, they simply click and their data is captured. The attackers goal is to capture usernames, passwords, payment information and other financial or sensitive account data.

To avoid falling victim to a phishing attack, users should avoid clicking on links from unknown senders, but should also remain aware of strange sounding emails from trusted users. Read your emails before clicking any links. If a user's email account is hacked, cyber criminals can use that account to send out phishing emails and trick other users into clicking because of the established level of trust. Most companies are adamant that they will not collect personal data, so if it seems out of the ordinary that you're now getting a request for personal information from a company you trust, call before submitting.

Password Attacks: Password attacks try to gain access to a users personal information or accounts by cracking their password. Since this type of attack doesn't require users to click a link or download any files, attackers will typically use various word combinations and commonly used passwords to access accounts.

To prevent password attacks, users should always use strong, varied passwords for all of their accounts. Try not to use personal information that can be easily guessed like names or birth dates, do not repeat passwords on multiple accounts, and do not keep your passwords listed on a stored file like a spreadsheet or word processing document. The best passwords are at least 8 characters long, utilize upper and lower case letters, and do not use words found in the dictionary.

In a world where cyber attacks are all too common, the best line of defense is a quality Managed Services Provider. Make sure you are partnering with an MSP that understands your businesses needs, is willing to take the time to teach your employees about cybersecurity, and who will monitor your devices 24/7 to stop an attack in its tracks.
