Media Advisory: Students to Design Adaptive Device to Assist Veteran
(Louisville, Kentucky, June 25, 2018) -Additive Manufacturing is increasing in popularity, and as the technology gains acceptance and adoption throughout the industry, employment opportunities for creative individuals in this field are rapidly growing, even capturing the attention of the high school, college, and career tech student population.
WHAT: For the fourth year, SME and Stratasys will co-sponsor the Additive Manufacturing Competition at the National SkillsUSA Conference in Louisville, Ky. The contest will evaluate students' abilities in Additive Manufacturing/3DPrinting as well as recognize outstanding students for excellence in the field of Digital and Additive Manufacturing.
This year's challenge will focus on solving a real-life medical problem for an actual patient - a veteran who endured a traumatic thumb amputation. After his incident, the patient was left with a missing digit and other side effects of the amputation. While onsite, students will design an adaptive device that allows the veteran to continue his favorite pastime activity: playing the PlayStation 3 gaming system. The winning device(s) will consist of 3D printed parts and must be designed so the veteran can comfortably use a PlayStation 3 controller, without the silicone prosthetic he currently uses.
WHEN: Tuesday, June 26 through Thursday, June 28, 2018
WHERE: Kentucky Exposition Center
937 Phillips Lane
Louisville, KY 40209
(North Wing/East Hall)
WHO: Forty-four teams of students representing high schools, colleges/universities, and career technical institutions are expected to participate in the three-day Additive Manufacturing Competition, which is open to active SkillsUSA students enrolled in design, manufacturing, or Computer Aided Design classes.
