Tele-News Conference: Research Offers New Insights Into Violence In U.S. Emergency Departments

                What:                    Tele-News Conference:  New research and polling
                                          data will be released during ACEP's annual
                                          meeting (ACEP18) in San Diego, Calif., providing
                                          insights into the scope and effects of emergency
                                          department violence.  Presenters will discuss
                                          what emergency physicians, nurses and patients
                                          are facing and how it is affecting patients.

                Who:                                Vidor Friedman, MD, FACEP, president-elect of
                                                     ACEP, to discuss the results of a nationwide
                                                     poll of emergency physicians on violence in the
                                                     emergency department.  He will present data
                                                     describing how common emergency department
                                                     violence is in the United States and how it
                                                     directly and indirectly affects patient care.




                                                   Terry Kowalenko, MD, FACEP, study author of
                                                     "Reassessment of Violence Against Emergency
                                                     Physicians," and a Michigan emergency physician.
                                                       He will discuss violence in Michigan emergency
                                                       departments and increasing concerns of feeling
                                                     "constantly fearful." Dr. Kowalenko is chair of
                                                     emergency medicine at Beaumont Hospitals, Royal
                                                     Oak, Troy, and Grosse Pointe, Michigan.  In
                                                     addition, he serves as professor of emergency
                                                     medicine at the Oakland University William
                                                     Beaumont School of Medicine.  Dr. Kowalenko has
                                                     focused his interests on workplace violence and
                                                     was a co-investigator on a Centers for Disease
                                                     Control/National Institutes of Health grant.




                                                   Leigh Vinocur, MD, FACEP, former chair of ACEP's
                                                     Emergency Department Violence Committee.  Dr.
                                                     Vinocur has served on the faculty at the
                                                     University of Maryland School of Medicine in
                                                     Baltimore and Louisiana State University Health
                                                     Science Center, School of Medicine in
                                                     Shreveport.  She has appeared regularly on
                                                     national media outlets such as the Today Show,
                                                     Fox News Channel, Dr. Oz Show. Like many
                                                     emergency medicine colleagues, she also has been
                                                     a victim of workplace violence.
