Arden Media Company - The Small Cell Scale Problem: How Do We Get to Ultra-dense Networks?

AUSTIN, Texas, Oct. 22, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- A new report published this week by RCR Wireless News, an Arden Media Company publication, examines how the need for network densification is driving small cell deployment trends.

As it relates to 5G, millimeter wave frequencies allow operators to achieve new levels of throughput, which will usher in a new era of mobile applications. But millimeter waves don't travel very far, which means carriers have to increase the density of their radio network by upgrading existing sites and adding new sites, particularly at the street level.

In addition to the current and coming wave of 5G investment, operators are beefing up LTE networks to gigabit-class. As users move in and out of 5G zones, they need to have a gigabit LTE surround to fall back on and provide continuity in network experience. The growing demand for mobile services, as evidenced by gigabit LTE and 5G deployments, demands a new level of network densification with small cells on the front lines.

Small cells also have an important role to play as building owners invest in in-building cellular. Operators reserve their in-building capex for marquee venues like stadiums, transit hubs like airports or train station, major Class A commercial real estate and otherwise for very high-value business customers. That means there are lot of buildings without in-building systems, which has a straight line to leasing and retention rates as well as net operating income, an important KPI for building owners and managers. Operators aren't going to invest in many of these properties putting the impetus to invest on the building owner or tenant.

As small cell densification efforts continue, RCR Editor in Chief Sean Kinney examines the topic in the new report, "The small cell scale problem: How do we get to ultra-dense networks?", and an accompanying webinar, featuring SureCall CEO Hongtao Zhan and Damiano Coletti, vice president of strategy and marketing for Airspan Networks, available to view here.
