Similar to the way NRG gives consumers the ability to choose their electric and natural gas provider, NRG Gives is a crowd-sourced, charitable giving program that enables employees and the public to engage with local nonprofits. Through the program, NRG employees nominate three finalists to participate in a public eight-day vote. For this round of NRG Gives, Little Smiles, the nonprofit with the most votes received the $50,000 grand prize.

Two additional nonprofits, Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society and The Seeing Eye received $10,000 and $5,000 donations, respectively, based on the final vote totals.

“Winning the $50,000 allows us to deliver huge smiles to kids throughout our region,” said Little Smiles Philadelphia Co-Founder Steve Grandizio. “Although it’s hard to measure the medicinal value of a smile, there’s no doubt we make a tremendous impact on the healing process.”

Little Smiles is a volunteer-driven nonprofit that works directly with doctors, nurses, and social workers to provide gifts and fun activities to children impacted by serious illness, homelessness, or tragedy. Through their programming, Little Smiles aims to create “little smiles” for children in unfortunate circumstances.

“On behalf of its employees and customers, NRG congratulates Little Smiles and the other nonprofits on another successful round of NRG Gives,” said NRG Retail East Vice President and General Manager Mike Starck. “NRG Gives provides these nonprofits the opportunity to engage with the community and garner support for their vital causes. For NRG, it is an honor to be a part of this process and to see the nonprofits amplify their messages.”

Because NRG is the leading energy supplier in Pennsylvania, with its retail east energy business based in Philadelphia, NRG is committed to supporting the communities where its customers live and work and the NRG Gives program is just one of the ways it does that. Through the NRG Gives program, NRG has awarded more than $440,000 to 14 nonprofits in the region since launching in November 2016.
