ContainerWeight launches tare weight database capturing nearly 100 percent of global fleet at Intermodal Conference and Exhibition with customer, Flexport

ROTTERDAM, The Netherlands, Nov. 6, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, ContainerWeight, the online container tare weight database, has launched at the Intermodal Conference and Exhibition. The database includes almost 100 percent of the global fleet and provides reliable, complete data on tare weights and container size-type codes. Flexport, the modern freight forwarder, is a key customer and will integrate its tare weight data into its comprehensive data platform.

As overweight containers can cause major accidents and injury to operating personnel, the International Maritime Organization adopted the SOLAS Container Weight Verification Requirement (VGM). Accurately documenting the VGM weight of containers is an important safety precaution, but determining the VGM weight is an arduous process. Accessible databases created by the Bureau International des Containers only include 45 percent of the global fleet.

"We know how difficult the VGM documentation process can be, and that there was a gap in the data available. With ContainerWeight, we've been able to include almost 100 percent of the global fleet with complete accuracy, which will help make the shipping industry more efficient and safer," said ContainerWeight co-founder and CEO, Jasper Nagtegaal. "We're bringing high quality, accurate data to the shipping industry at a critical time."

Nagtegaal added that both Flexport and ContainerWeight have validated the data using actual, global shipper data, which has proven to be 99 percent consistent. "We're a data-driven organization, so data integrity and efficiency are key to us," said Jan van Casteren, Vice President of Europe at Flexport. "One of our goals is to provide outstanding customer service, and having access to the shipping industry's most accurate data on tare weights will allow us to continue to provide world-class support for our clients."

ContainerWeight obtained its data through secure access to millions of photos of container doors taken at terminals worldwide. ContainerWeight offers an API that gives customers immediate access to the tare weight of any box available for specific container numbers. This data can be used by a shipper or a third party to calculate the VGM of a container in accordance with Method 2 under the IMO SOLAS regulation on container weights.
