Acorn Product Development and Purigen Biosystems Announce Breakthrough Platform for Extracting, Enriching and Quantifying DNA and RNA from Biological Samples

NEWARK, Calif., Dec. 5, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- In less than one year, a team of Chemists, Mechanical and Electrical Engineers, Hardware and Software Developers, and Manufacturing experts from Purigen and Acorn designed and developed an innovative hands-free DNA/RNA extraction platform that can process biological samples to deliver qPCR and NGS prep-ready nucleic acid using disposable plastic chips.

The mechanical complexity, including all of the diverse subsystems, required deep design and engineering expertise for everything from motion control, thermal analysis, chassis and EMI design to ID and early DFM implementation.

The multi-disciplinary team drove a holistic system level solution for the platform. Rather than isolated design, engineering, and manufacturing teams, the project team combined their disciplines day-to-day and created a cohesive final product that truly resonates with the market. In addition to demonstrating its ability to execute a project to completion on schedule, they were very good stewards of the development budget.

Commenting on his partnership with Acorn, Dr. Barney Saunders, CEO for Purigen said, "Developed by a talented team, our jointly developed solution fundamentally transforms sample preparation for many underserved clinical genomics applications. Getting a complex biotech instrument to market quickly required Acorn's support for Design for Manufacturability (DFM) from the beginning all the way into the production line. In about nine months, our instrument solution was through UL approval and on the manufacturing line."

"Acorn's design and engineering relationship with Purigen provides an excellent model for rapid and responsive product development--from initial concepts to a complete solution, with cutting-edge design for optimal manufacturability", explained Ken Haven, Founder, President and CEO for Acorn. "It is imperative to have all disciplines involved from the beginning for innovative, reliable, and profitable product development. Purigen both understands and embraces Acorn's approach to DFM including product design, analytics, engineering, vendor management, and the manufacturing oversight that Acorn brings to the team."

About Purigen Biosystems, Inc.
Purigen Biosystems is redefining nucleic acid sample prep by providing an innovative platform based on the remarkably efficient isotachophoresis technology invented at Stanford University by Professor Juan Santiago. Purigen's automated benchtop instrumentation, and accompanying microfluidic chip, purifies nucleic acid samples from a wide variety of sources, including minute or otherwise challenging clinical genomic samples. The purified DNA or RNA is then immediately compatible with a wide range of downstream detection methods, including next-generation sequencing, PCR, and other genomic applications.
