Prime Minister highlights investment to make commuting safer and more efficient in Sudbury

SUDBURY, ON, Feb. 13, 2019 /CNW/ - In 2016, the Government of Canada launched the biggest infrastructure plan in Canadian history. Since then, we have invested in and approved hundreds of infrastructure projects to expand highways, build new roads, and improve existing routes - making traveling safer and easier for drivers across the country.

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today highlighted progress made on the project to extend Maley Drive in Sudbury, Ontario. This project involves building and updating roads to create a new, much-needed arterial link connecting the east side to the west side of the city.

With construction under way, the project will continue to create good, middle class jobs. Once completed, it will reduce commute times, improve commuter safety, and support business development in the area. It will also protect the environment and help keep local residents healthy by reducing emissions from vehicle congestion and traffic delays.

    --  The project includes the construction of new roads, and updating of
        existing roads from the intersection of LaSalle Boulevard and Frood Road
        to the intersection of Maley Drive and Falconbridge Highway.
    --  The Government of Canada is contributing $26.7 million through the New
        Building Canada Fund - Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component -
        National and Regional Projects. The Government of Ontario is investing
        $26.7 million, and the City of Sudbury is responsible for the remainder
        of the total project costs.
    --  Through the Investing in Canada infrastructure plan, the Government of
        Canada is investing more than $180 billion over 12 years in public
        transit projects, green infrastructure, social infrastructure, trade and
        transportation routes, and Canada's rural and northern communities.
    --  More than $10 billion of this funding is supporting trade and
        transportation projects, including $5 billion available for investment
        through the Canada Infrastructure Bank.
