WHAT: Press conference and rally in support of passing legislation to clearly define public work
WHEN: Wednesday, March 27, 2019 at 12pm
WHERE: New York State Capitol, Million Dollar Staircase
WHY: Continuing the momentum of their campaign to pass legislation closing the public works loophole on publicly subsidized projects and guaranteeing construction workers strong wages, the Laborers union, in conjunction with other Building Trades affiliates, has partnered with New Immigrant Community Empowerment (NICE) for a day of action to urge legislators to pass the measure in the New York State budget. With the clock ticking towards the April 1(st) budget deadline, tomorrow's action will serve to remind the Assembly and Senate of the uplifting impact this wage requirement will have on workers both upstate and down, at all levels of skill in the industry.
The Mason Tenders District Council of Greater New York is the 17,000-member umbrella council, representing five local unions affiliated with the Laborers International Union of North America: General Building Laborers Local 66; Asbestos, Lead & Hazardous Waste Laborers Local 78; Construction & General Laborers Local 79; Waste Material, Recycling & General Industrial Laborers Local 108, and: Lay Faculty Association Local 1261.
The New York State Laborers' Union represents over 40,000 members employed in the construction industry and other fields throughout the state, and organized into more than 24 local unions and 5 district councils.
