Newly Available Endoscope with Motorized Rotation System Incubated at Primo Medical Group
STOUGHTON, Mass., April 30, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- The technology behind the world's first endoscope with a motorized rotation system was nurtured at Primo Medical Group. The company incubated and founded Spirus Medical, Inc. in 2005 to develop the innovative 'Endoluminal Advancement System' for gastrointestinal endoscopy. The technology was a significant breakthrough that enabled gastroenterologists to perform flexible endoscopy procedures more efficiently.
Spirus Medical's one-of-a-kind technology is used in conjunction with a conventional flexible endoscope. It incorporates a rotating overtube equipped with spiral-shaped fins positioned on the endoscope. The rotation of the spiral fins supports continuous pleating or folding of the small intestine, with a goal of improving scope maneuverability and shortening procedure times.
Spirus Medical's new powered endoscope subsequently drew much attention from the world's leading endoscope makers. Having the vision to see the benefits this new technology would bring to patients, Olympus Corporation acquired Spirus Medical in 2011 and integrated this technology with its own. The new Olympus "PowerSpiral" small intestine endoscopy system subsequently has been developed and launched in Europe and parts of Asia.
