New Middle School Breaks Ground At SunCal's Potomac Shores Community In Virginia

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va., May 13, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Local officials joined in a groundbreaking on Thursday, May 9, at SunCal's Potomac Shores master-planned community to launch construction of a new middle school to be operated by Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS).

SunCal, the master developer of Potomac Shores, donated 33 acres for the school and has been collaborating with PWCS on the preliminary work to develop the site. The $52.4 million complex is planned to support 1,491 students from the surrounding area, including Potomac Shores' neighborhoods, and it will be the district's largest middle school in terms of its designed student capacity. The school, serving 6th through 8th grade students, will open in the fall of 2021.

The campus will have nearly 200,000 square feet of floor space, and it will be the county's first three-story middle school. The school will have separate floors for each grade level, with each floor featuring open, collaborative learning spaces. It will also have an 800-seat auditorium, other educational facilities and an enclosed courtyard surrounded by the various school buildings.

"We're very pleased to be working with the PWCS to make this middle school possible," said David Soyka, Senior Vice President, SunCal. "Having this facility within Potomac Shores will be a great convenience for our residents, and it will be the second school in Potomac Shores, the first being the elementary school that opened in 2017."
