Class Action Lawsuit Filed by Stueve Siegel Hanson Against Ring Alleging Security Devices Led to Harassment by Hackers

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Jan. 9, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Stueve Siegel Hanson and Tycko & Zavareei have filed a class action complaint against Ring LLC on behalf of a Mississippi couple and Texas couple. Plaintiffs Ashley LeMay and Dylan Blakely, and Todd Craig and Tania Amador allege they were harassed and spied on in their homes after hackers breached their Ring cameras due to the home security devices' inadequate security protection.

Court documents allege a hacker accessed LeMay and Blakely's Ring cameras to shout racial slurs and taunt their eight-year-old daughter in her own bedroom, including playing a song that appeared in a scene from the 2010 horror film "Insidious."

In a similar incident the complaint alleges that after taking control of the Ring system in Craig and Amador's home, hackers spied on the couple, accessed their doorbell camera and told them, "I'm outside your front door," and threatened them with "termination" if they did not pay a ransom of 50 bitcoin.

Ring has not disclosed the identity of either hacker to the couples and has maintained there are no security issues compromising their systems or networks.

The couples, on behalf of themselves and all persons similarly situated, brought the lawsuit "to hold Ring responsible for its defective devices and systems, require that Ring take all necessary measures to secure the privacy of user accounts and devices, and compensate Plaintiffs and the Class members for the damage that its acts and omissions have caused."

The lawsuit asserts claims for negligence and invasion of privacy, among other claims.

The Plaintiffs and class are represented by Norman Siegel, Barrett Vahle and Austin Moore of Stueve Siegel Hanson LLP; and Hassan Zavareei, Katherine Aizpuru and Annick Persinger of Tycko & Zavareei LLP. LeMay et al v. Ring LLC 2:20-cv-00074 was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.
