Are We Doing Enough To Protect Our Hearts?: Millions Of Patients Face Continued Cardiovascular Risk

NEW YORK, Feb. 28, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Millions of statin-treated Americans are using unproven or outdated treatment choices in an effort to protect their hearts.

Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death for men and women in the United States, accounting for 1 of every 3 deaths. Statins are the first-line prescription therapy to reduce the risk for cardiovascular events, such as heart attack and stroke, but they only lower the risk of a life-threatening cardiovascular event by 25-35%, which is why many patients turn to or are prescribed additional treatments to further reduce cardiovascular risk.

In honor of Heart Health month, Dr. John Osborne partnered with D S Simon Media and Your Update TV to discuss the latest science on heart health, and how patients can best protect their hearts.

New consumer and physician survey data revealed that patients are often prescribed or recommended fenofibrates, niacin, or dietary fish oil supplements on top of statins to treat their persistent cardiovascular risk. Many healthcare professionals were unaware that fenofibrates and niacin, when used with statins, are not FDA-approved, when in fact, the FDA withdrew approval for fenofibrates and niacin in combination with statins because the risk outweighed the benefit. Additionally, many patients admitted they do not regularly investigate cardiovascular disease treatments beyond what their doctor shares with them, and specifically, those taking fenofibrates believe they are doing everything they can to prevent future cardiovascular events.

"While there are reasons for some patients to take treatments such as fenofibrates, niacin or dietary fish oil supplements, none of these options are proven or FDA-approved to reduce cardiovascular risk when used in combination with statins," Dr. Osborne said. "Treatments to reduce cardiovascular risk are evolving, so it is important that patients and healthcare professionals are aware of and discuss the latest advancements that can protect our hearts."
