JetBrains Launches Game Dev Tool Rider For Unreal Engine

PRAGUE, April 22, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- JetBrains, the company that created an extended family of integrated development environments (IDE) for various programming languages, today announced the official launch of Rider for Unreal Engine, a fast and powerful IDE for Unreal Engine and Windows C++ development. It enables faster, smarter game development and is now available for public preview.

With the update, JetBrains Rider becomes a universal game development instrument, supporting the most important game engines in the industry. It also has room for growth: Rider for Unreal Engine, for now, operates only on Windows, but will be extended to macOS and Linux in the near future.

Rider for Unreal Engine aims to reshape and improve the whole game development process. The toolset provides a rich feature set without compromising speed or responsiveness: developers are supported daily by its 250+ code inspections, 50+ context actions, solution-wide refactoring, and code generation abilities. It's not just about C++ code - the IDE reads the Blueprints (BP), visual gameplay scripts from the Unreal Editor, providing a unique and first-in-class cross-language BP-C++ experience.

Rider also provides code completion for reflection specifiers and ensures that the UE4 code is accurate with the help of specialized UE4 inspections for missing or incorrectly set UE4 reflection macros. With these features, Rider is unmatched by other solutions.

"Epic has always been committed to providing high-quality tools that empower content creators, and we're excited to see JetBrains supporting coders in a similar way through Rider," Ben Marsh, Lead Programmer of Epic Games said. "Combining feature-rich code completion and refactoring tools with a deep integration to the Unreal Engine toolset is fertile ground for transformative workflow improvements."

The Rider for Unreal Engine launch comes on the heels of JetBrains' launch of Space, an all-in-one team collaboration environment, and its 20-year anniversary--a particularly remarkable milestone considering the tech unicorn has never raised outside funds. JetBrains released its first product, IntelliJ Renamer, in July 2000 and has since grown to have a portfolio of 28 products, over 8 million professional users, and over 1,200 employees.
