Four Seasons Plumbing alerts Asheville homeowners to the dangers of high pressure on plumbing systems

ASHEVILLE, N.C., Sept. 15, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Four Seasons Plumbing, a leading home services provider serving the Asheville and Hendersonville areas, is advising area homeowners to be on the lookout for damage to pipes, appliances and fixtures from high water pressure.

"The Asheville area has a history of high water pressure issues," said Max Rose, owner of Four Seasons Plumbing. "Even though high water pressure can make showering more enjoyable for some, it can really do harm to your plumbing systems and your appliances, none of which were made to handle high water pressure. Not only that, if your pipes have small cracks, they can become large breaks if the water pressure is not regulated. This means costly repairs or replacements."

In 2016, Asheville recorded losses of approximately 4 million gallons of water a day due to leaky or broken pipes throughout the water system, with some of this attributed to the force of high water pressure on old and deteriorating pipes. The City of Asheville reported that in some areas of the city, water pressure was measured at 400 pounds per square inch (PSI), while the recommended water pressure in homes should be between 40 PSI to 80 PSI.

Homeowners in Asheville should have a pressure reduction valve installed near the water meter on the city water that's piped into their homes to reduce the pressure on the home's system and appliances. Homes built after 2002 are required to have these devices, but many have never been inspected or replaced. Signs of a potential water pressure system malfunction are:

-- Water pipes that are making a hissing or thumping noise
-- Water that spurts out of the faucet when turned on
-- A constant sound of running water
-- Water bills that are higher than normal
-- Leaks around appliances like water heaters or dishwashers

"Early detection of water pressure problems is critical," Rose said. "Small leaks become big leaks, and if left undetected, they can cause huge water bills and possible flooding. Pressure reduction valves only last 10 years or so, and having yours inspected is the first defense in preventing major problems due to high water pressure."

Four Seasons Plumbing inspects and replaces or repairs pressure reduction valves and can recommend ways for homeowners to save money on water bills. Its technicians follow strict health and safety guidelines in order to continue providing the Asheville area with essential plumbing-related services.
