Babyscripts Welcomes Haywood Brown, MD, former president of ACOG, to Advisory Board
WASHINGTON, Oct. 15, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Babyscripts, the leading virtual care platform for managing obstetrics, today welcomed Haywood Brown, MD, to the Babyscripts Advisory Board. Dr. Brown is Vice President for Institutional Equity at the University of South Florida and the Associate Dean in the Morsani College of Medicine at USF, where he serves as Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine. In his role at Babyscripts, Brown will offer guidance on strategic growth and advise on digital health innovation for improved outcomes, particularly for the Medicaid community, as well as help address the unique barriers facing the black maternal population, a primary impact objective of the company. The appointment of Dr. Brown to the Babyscripts Advisory Board is the most recent step in Babyscripts' increased commitment to diversity and inclusion at the leadership level.
Dr. Haywood Brown brings over three decades of clinical, academic, and leadership expertise to Babyscripts, including Chair of Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology and past President of the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine. Dr. Brown served as the 68th President of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, as well as Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Duke University. Dr. Brown also led the NIH DC Initiative on Infant Mortality and the HSRA Perinatal and Patient Safety Collaboration.
Dr. Brown is especially committed to the care of women at high risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes, particularly those marginalized, and the impact of racial and economic disparity in maternal and infant morbidity and mortality. His ACOG Presidency focused on disparity in women's health equity and Redefining the Postpartum Period: The Beginning of Lifelong Health. These are topics that particularly reflect Babyscripts' mission to provide better pregnancies to all mothers, especially the vulnerable.
"Dr. Haywood Brown has been a strong champion and guide for Babyscripts from day one, particularly in our support for the Medicaid pregnant population," said Juan Pablo Segura, co-founder and President of Babyscripts. "Dr. Brown has decades of experience in healthcare leadership and clinical expertise -- bringing him on to Babyscripts in this official role is going to help us amplify and advance the important work that we're doing in care management and social risk."
"What is so inspiring about Babyscripts is that they are aligning their vision with ACOG guidelines to develop technology to manage the whole spectrum of patients, creating unique experiences for each patient profile," said Dr. Haywood Brown. "I've seen Babyscripts impact real change in the field of maternal health through their solutions and through dialogue and collaboration with others in the industry. As a provider who is committed to opening access to care for all mothers, I'm eager to support their vision."
The decision to welcome Dr. Brown to the advisory board marks another step in Babyscripts' continued dedication to health equity, diversity and inclusion. Delivering care to geographically and economically vulnerable populations is a cornerstone of the company's mission. Babyscripts has developed and continues to invest in functionalities to address social determinants of health, mental health including postpartum depression, and problems of substance abuse, especially as the COVID-19 pandemic has widened the pre-existing gaps in maternal health care for the medically underserved. In 2019, Babyscripts created the Joint Deployment model, a partnership model between patient, providers, and payers to use Babyscripts Virtual Maternity Care to improve access for these vulnerable populations, and recently was instrumental in the passage of one of the first ever digital health reimbursement mandates, an addendum to the DC Council's Postpartum Care Expansion Act.
