NVIAMG NewRoad™ Brings Sustainable ‘Plastics in Roads’ to Environmentally Sensitive State Parks With Pilot Project in Pennsylvania

The pilot project at Ridley Creek State Park marks an important collaboration teaming NVIAMG with the state departments of transportation (PennDOT), conservation and natural resources (DCNR) and environmental protection (DEP). The joint project through the state’s collaborative Strategic Recycling Program (SRP) in part is an effort to save taxpayers money and to help keep waste plastic out of the environment.

NewRoad™ asphalt additives contain highly engineered polymers made of post-consumer and post-industrial plastic that otherwise might pollute the environment. The result is a stronger, more sustainable asphalt mix that extends road life by as much as 50%. That helps stretch budgets.

The Pennsylvania agencies supported the pilot project after a thorough review of NewRoad™ test data and five years of in-field performance in other states. Those projects included state and local roads and commercial projects.

Over the next five years, Pennsylvania agencies will compare road sections containing NewRoad™, including the park entrance, with stretches paved with conventional asphalt.
