New Study by Patient Care America, Published in Kidney360, Demonstrates Efficacy and Safety of Intradialytic Parenteral Nutrition (IDPN) in Improving Albumin Levels Among Hemodialysis Patients

POMPANO BEACH, Fla., April 8, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- A newly published study in the American Society of Nephrology's Kidney360 journal highlights a valuable therapy in the management of patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing in-center hemodialysis (ICHD). The study, titled "Intradialytic Parenteral Nutrition During In-Center Hemodialysis of Patients Leads to Increase in Albumin Without Compromising Safety: Retrospective Analysis," provides evidence supporting the use of IDPN to improve albumin levels without compromising patient safety.

"Albumin is a well-established surrogate marker for survival in dialysis patients," stated Karin Hehenberger, MD, PhD, Chief Medical Officer of Patient Care America. "This evidence-based research is just the beginning of our contribution to improving outcomes for those living with kidney disease."

The 5-year retrospective review of data across 1,039 dialysis centers in 43 U.S. states and Washington D.C. analyzed 2,270 charts of adult patients receiving IDPN therapy three times per week concurrent with their regular dialysis sessions. A total of 1,631 patients consented and were eligible for the study.

Key findings include:

-- 82% of patients achieved a clinically meaningful rise in albumin (>=0.2
g/dL) in the first 6 months.
-- A mean increase of 0.330 g/dL in serum albumin levels over 6 months of
        IDPN therapy.
-- Patients with lower baseline albumin and those who were younger showed a
        faster and more significant improvement.
-- Fewer than 8% of patients reported minor, treatable side
        effects--underscoring IDPN's safety profile.

"I am very pleased to see that this largest evidence-based study clearly demonstrates that administration of IDPN to albumin deficient patients on hemodialysis raises their albumin levels in a consistent and prolonged manner. Since these patients frequently need many surgical interventions, their overall recovery, including wound healing, has been repeatedly linked to their nutritional status as measured by their albumin levels," said Mark A. Hardy, MD, PhD (Hon), FACS, Auchincloss Professor Emeritus of Surgery and Director Emeritus and Founder of the Transplantation Center, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

The full paper, sponsored by Baxter Healthcare Corporation, Clinical Nutrition Division, is available online at: https://journals.lww.com/kidney360/abstract/9900/intradialytic_parenteral_nutrition_during.629.aspx. The analysis was led by Maiya Slusser-Hogan, MS, RD, CD, CNSC, Manager of Clinical Education and Research at PCA, with study leadership and oversight from Dr. Karin Hehenberger and Dr. Mark A. Hardy.

"The publication marks a pivotal milestone in our company's clinical validation of our key therapy and cements our position as one of the premier renal solutions providers in the U.S. Our dedicated team works tirelessly to deliver precision medicines that make a real difference in those living with kidney disease," concluded Phil Keough, Chief Executive Officer of Patient Care America.
