URAL Automobile Works JSC

The history of the “URAL” Automobile Works” JSC dates back to 30th November 1941 – that day the USSR State Defense Committee made a decision to establish a vehicle engine production and a foundry evacuated from Moscow Vehicle Plant named by Stalin (ZIS) in Miass. On 8th July, 1944 the first ZIS-5V truck left the assembly line. The company was founded in 2001 as a result of restructuring “URALAZ” Production Complex and is currently incorporated in GAZ Group.

The “URAL” Automobile Works” JSC is a leading manufacturer of all-wheel-drive heavy trucks in the Russian market. The main distinguishing features of the trucks belonging to the URAL vehicle family are high off-road capability, ability to surmount ditches up to 1.2 m wide, vertical walls up to 0.55 m high, fords down to 1.75 m deep, move across snowed-up virgin terrain down to 1 m deep, to operate efficiently at ambient temperatures ranging from –50°С to +50°С. The trucks have high reparability and are intended for open-air storage.

High off-road capability, big carrying capacity, reliability and easy technical maintenance have made URAL trucks the preferred vehicles for different industrial branches. Major oil and gas companies are among the main customers. A few hundreds of special-purpose vehicle models, like shift-team buses, truck cranes, tankers, refuellers, fire-fighting vehicles, mobile repair workshops, various plants for oil & gas and timber complexes, mining industry and public utilities are mounted onto the URAL chassis. The family of the URAL vehicles has high commonality of aggregates and components that allows reducing maintenance and operational expenses.

The “URAL” Automobile Works” JSC manufactures: 4x4, 6x6 & 8x8 all-wheel-drive off-road trucks having carrying capacity from 4 to 20 tons; Shift-team buses based on 4x4 and 6x6 all-wheel-drive URAL trucks (seating capacity from 22 to 30 passengers), cargo-passenger vehicles on their base, including those equipped with hydraulic cranes.

Advanced technologies applied by the “URAL” Automobile Works include: JSC: Production System based on «lean production» principles developed by Toyota; CSA quality control instrument («ready-made truck audit by customer’s eyes»); Automated ERP-company control system – Infor ERP LN 6, allowing to automatize all production processes, to determine actual cost of the product on-line; Quality Gate System applied when developing new products and allowing efficient control over new products planning and development – PPDS (Product Planning and Development System); Quality Management System Certificate issued by TÜV-CERT (Germany) according to the requirements of ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 9001:2008 Standards. Transfer to more stringent standard – ISO/TU 16949 is being prepared.
