When in doubt, don't click or download.

Ransomware attackers may try to prey on your company. But, if you exercise caution and learn how to protect your business from attacks, you'll be in a stronger position to keep your company and its data safe.

To get started, here are four ways to protect your business from a cyber-attack:

Perform regular updates. It's very important to update anything "old." This means updating old operating systems and outdated software. Updates are meant to enhance and protect existing software. Anytime you are prompted to make an update, you should do it. You'll enjoy a better and/or more protected version of your software. If you're not prompted to update your software, you can go to your software provider's website and look for the latest updates. Usually they will offer directions for how to update their software.

Use a hard drive. You must protect your data from cyber-attacks. Regular backups to hard drives will keep your information safe from hackers and available in the event you have a computer problem that wipes out your files. However, be aware that cyber criminals can access data on a hard drive if that hard drive is connected to a computer with access to the internet. So, it's a good idea to put information on a hard drive but then disconnect the hard drive from the computer--just backup your files regularly so the latest version will always be available.

Exercise caution. Email attachments are one of the ways cyber criminals spread viruses. To prevent a ransomware attack, don't open email attachments from people you don't know. Likewise, don't click on anything in an email from an unknown sender, including links. And, of course, don't download anything to your computer before verifying its legitimacy.

Run antivirus software. Antivirus software runs regular checks on your computer to make sure it's clean. It can also tell you if a document presents a download risk. Basically, the software provides an extra security blanket, so it's worth purchasing.
