Ask the Expert With EP Henry: Four Ways to Add Curb Appeal With Pavers

WOODBURY, N.J., July 3, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Sprucing up the front yard goes a long way, but adding some architectural elements is the professional's way to design a stunning hardscape.

EP Henry asked landscaping expert Brad Johnson, owner of Monroeville, NJ company Johnsons Landscaping, LLC, for his suggestions on using pavers to boost a home's curb appeal.

1. Cover or replace concrete. "Cover concrete porches," Mr. Johnson said. When it comes to concrete slabs so common for walkways and porches, adding some texture and visual interest to those spaces can change the look completely. "Stone Veneers definitely make a difference." Putting veneer stones on a concrete porch can be a small weekend project that adds a big impact.

2. Add small projects like a garden wall. "Anywhere there is a slope, a planter box or a [sharp] corner, we can do a curved wall. We try to keep everything curved instead of square," Mr. Johnson said. Curves are more interesting and attractive than straight lines because they mimic what is found in nature. "I can't tell you the last time I did a straight walkway. It's all curved and free-flowing."

3. Replace siding with Cast Stone Veneers. "Taking down stucco or siding, especially siding that is the bottom of a split level home," Mr. Johnson said, "definitely makes the house look a lot different." Resurfacing the front of the home with veneers accomplishes the "wow factor" real estate experts and rehabbers suggest. And it's often less expensive and easier than one might think.

4. Install a paver driveway. "A paver driveway depends on the budget," Mr. Johnson said. "Concrete cracks. With walkways and driveways, pavers look ten times better." Even colored or stamped concrete can crack and look rundown. The initial cost of replacing a concrete or asphalt driveway with durable and beautiful pavers can seem significant, but the result is truly breathtaking. The cost can be recouped over time, but if a complete paver driveway breaks the bank, paver accents, inlays or borders can drastically improve the space.

The visual presence of a home influences more than just the home's price. Curb appeal is important for not only the viewers passing by the home or for the health of the neighborhood, but for the home owners. A beautiful front scene conveys the warm and welcoming atmosphere every person wants in a home.
