Nevada Politicians Partner With Recovery Community

LAS VEGAS, Aug. 28, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Nevada Recovery PAC will launch a platform for candidates and recovery supporters on Wednesday August 29, 2018.

For the first time, recovery supporters and candidates will meet in person to discuss addiction in Nevada. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, from 2011 to 2016, the number of heroin-related deaths has doubled in Nevada.

Over the past three weeks, Recovery PAC hosted platform meetings for the recovery community. During the meetings, supporters discuss key issues in the recovery community such as stigma and criminal justice reform. Part of the meetings involve organizing and mobilizing recovery-oriented voters- something that has not been done before.

Drug overdoses are the number one cause of death for people under fifty according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Last August, President Trump declared the opioid epidemic a national emergency. However, advocates are concerned with the lack of input from the recovery and mental health community.

"People in recovery are the solution to the addiction crisis," says Trey Delap, Political Director of Recovery PAC. "There is value for the person recovering from addiction because they have lived experience."

Up until now, the government hasn't been asking the recovery community for input. "We are facilitating the dialogue between the recovery community and candidates." On Wednesday, politicians will hear the recovery PAC's key concerns. Candidates will also offer practical insight into the political process.

Recovery PAC formed to elevate the profile of a recovery-oriented voter and connect candidates to advocates. They are supported by individuals in recovery. The Recovery PAC supports community-based recovery for addiction and mental health issues.

The candidates will meet with the recovery community inside community room three at 5:30PM inside 4800 Alpine Place, Las Vegas, NV 89107.
