PAINWeekEnd in St. Louis, Missouri, Offers CE/CME Education to Aid the Opioid Public Health Crisis
MONTCLAIR, N.J., April 8, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- PAINWeekEnd on May 4 at the St. Louis Union Station Hotel, 1820 N. Missouri is the only state in the nation that has not established a prescription drug monitoring program, although a 6th attempt passed the House of Representatives in February of this year. A companion bill currently awaits action in the state senate that, if passed and signed by Governor Mike Parson, who has expressed support, would authorize the Department of Health and Human Services to establish a PDMP with a proposed effective date of August 8, 2019. As currently written, use of the PDMP by prescribers would not be mandatory at this time. Past opposition to the legislation has centered on information privacy concerns, but also on the potential for adversely impacting pain patients' access to care. At PAINWeekEnd St. Louis, senior faculty member Michael Schatman, PhD, CPE, DASPE, will present Opioid Moderatism and Rapprochement: The Search for a Sane Middle Ground. In a recent article in the Journal of Pain Research, Dr. Schatman wrote, "We are concerned that a failure of clinicians to adequately mitigate risk...has resulted in prescription opioids having essentially been 'litigated away'--resulting in widespread opiophobia and oligoanalgesia. Few argue for a return to patterns of reckless prescribing that was one of the root causes of the prescription opioid crisis. However, a more moderatist approach needs to be considered if the opioid pendulum is to ever find a safe yet humane resting place." Dr. Schatman will also present Reefer Madness Revisited, a review of what we know--and what we don't know--about the efficacy and safety of medical cannabinoids.
