Multipure Aqualuxe Earns New PFOA/PFOS/Microcystin Certification

LAS VEGAS, July 2, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Multipure's most powerful and advanced drinking water system, the Aqualuxe water purifier, has become the first product to gain NSF certification for the reduction of PFOA, PFOS, and microcystin under NSF/ANSI Standard 53 for Health Effects.

This latest certification joins the Aqualuxe's already exceptional array of existing certifications: NSF/ANSI Standard 42 for chlorine, chloramine, particulate matter, and taste/odor reduction; NSF/ANSI Standard 53 for arsenic V, asbestos, chlordane, cyst, lead, mercury, MTBE, PCB, radon, toxaphene, and VOC reduction; NSF/ANSI Standard 401 for emerging compounds and incidental contaminants such as BPA, DEET, and pharmaceuticals; and NSF Standard P231 for the microbiological purification of bacteria, viruses, and live cysts.

NSF International had previously developed standards for PFOA/PFOS, and microcystin treatment, designated NSF Protocol P473: Drinking Water Treatment Units - PFOA and PFOS, and NSF Protocol P477: Drinking Water Treatment Units - Microcystin. While P473 requires the effective reduction of PFOA/PFOS to EPA-established health advisory levels of 70 parts per trillion (ppt), and P477 requires the reduction of microcystin to a level of 300 ppt or lower, both protocols are specific and limited in scope to those particular categories. As of May 2019, NSF has updated its existing NSF/ANSI Standard 53 (Health Effects) to include PFOA/PFOS/microcystin treatment. To be certified for NSF Standard 53 for PFOA/PFOS/microcystin treatment, a drinking water system must not only reduce the presence of PFOA/PFOS/microcystin to the P473 and P477 standards, but must also conform to the existing material and physical requirements of Standard 53.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) are chemicals that fall under the larger chemical grouping known as perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and perfluorochemicals (PFC). And while they are used in a variety of industrial processes and manufactured goods such as carpets, nonstick cookware, and furniture fabrics due to their utility in resisting water, grease, and stains, they have also been linked to negative health effects such as elevated cholesterol levels, hormone suppression, cancer, and decreased child immune system health.

Microcystin is the most common of the cyanotoxins - a group of chemical contaminants formed by blue-green algae. In the right conditions, exponential growth of this algae occurs during events known as harmful algae blooms (HABs). HABs and ingestion or inhalation of microcystin can lead to severe liver damage, abdominal pain, nausea, headaches, and even pneumonia.
