Green Solar Technologies Founder Pleased about New Technology to Reduce Dust on Solar Panels

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 12, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- With so much hype around the environmental and financial benefits of solar panels, it's so often forgotten to talk about how to maintain a healthy solar panel system once it's installed.

However, while other solar news can often be overpowering, scientists have not stopped in their pursuit to make solar panel systems as efficient as possible.

According to a recent article on Phys Org, "In a new study published in Langmuir, the researchers confirmed that modifying the surface properties of solar panels may greatly reduce the amount of dust remaining on the surface, and significantly increase the potential of solar energy harvesting applications in the desert."

Founder of Green Solar Technologies, Nicki Zvik, comments on the findings stating, "This is incredible news. While the initial purpose is to reduce dust on solar panels in the desert, this technology can be used just about anywhere. And in desert states like California and Arizona, which are prime states for solar energy due to their extremely sunny climates, this technology would not only be useful for large panel systems, but it will also be immensely beneficial for homeowners who have some trouble cleaning their rooftop systems."

The article goes on to explain, "The researchers explored the effect of modifying a silicon substrate (Si), a semiconductor used in photovoltaic cells, to mimic the self-cleaning properties of the lotus leaf, as water rolls down the leaves and removes contamination. It is known that superhydrophobicity reduces the friction between water droplets and the surface, thus allowing water drops to slide clean particles from surfaces. However, the forces that attach and detach particles from surfaces during the self-cleaning mechanism and the effect of nanotextures on these forces are not fully understood."

"This technology is still new," shares Zvik. "But what this really means is that we're on the right path with developing more efficient and easy-to-maintain solar systems. We know that technology has been an integral factor in making solar panels more effective for a lower cost, but we don't always talk about the ways scientists are making systems more accessible to the public. If panels can be created that are easier to clean, this could greatly help those who have difficulty cleaning their systems on their own or for times when the weather simply doesn't cooperate...for example, when temperatures rise to 120 degrees in the summer in Arizona or New Mexico. That being said, we at Green Solar Technologies are beyond pleased to see progress being made in this realm of the solar world."
