Monterey Technologies, Inc.'s ViPER Mission Planning Application Featured in Department of Defense Publication

PARK CITY, Utah, May 4, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Park City based Monterey Technologies, Inc.'s (MTI) mission planning application, Visual Planning, Execution and Review (ViPER), has been featured as a Department of Defense Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) success story.

ViPER is an adaptable toolset that enables planners to pull together information from distributed sources, integrate all considerations in a single application, and rapidly transition from sketching to execution.

MTI is a Human Factors Engineering and Human-System Integration engineering firm that develops software and applications that make complex processes and equipment more usable and effective. MTI's flagship ViPER application seamlessly coordinates and compiles complex data points into a visual plan for executing missions. MTI developed ViPER as part of a research and development contract from the Department of Defense SBIR program. The SBIR program is a United States Government program, coordinated by the Small Business Administration intended to help small businesses conduct research and development.

"I believe in the SBIR program," states Bryan Ramsay, Deputy Program Manager for Science and Technology Project Management Activity 281, Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR). "If we had tried to do this through a regular acquisition process, it would have cost much more money."

While developed for Military and Defense use, the ViPER mission planning application has use cases that span public and private sectors.

Within the military sector ViPER simplifies the planning process of deploying personnel, resources, and assets for complex missions. In the commercial sector ViPER can be utilized in disaster relief campaigns, for first responder initiatives, and for fleet and asset management.

Within the military space ViPER simplifies the planning process of deploying personnel, resources, and assets for complex missions. ViPER can visualize all of the geographic and time-based constraints. It shares information digitally and automatically. It outputs flowcharts and messages, uses a plans database (routes, maps), helps define routes, performs calculations for tactical decisions, consults weather forecasts, and exports data, including screenshots and orders, and schedules of events in a small, readable file. It also prints the plan, significantly reducing the time between the Commander's order to execute a new plan and the executive order to follow it.

"ViPER provided us with a single tool that enables electronic planning across multiple different platforms, does the coordination, and synchronizes data and messages in real time," states Ramsay.

The private sector and non-military use applications for ViPER are extensive.

"There are significant non-military applications for the general ViPER product. For example, international relief efforts, like in Haiti, where a team must plan for multiple types of assets over time, determine who needs what, when they need it, where supplies are, where they need to be, how to get them there, and what the priority is for delivery," states Chamberlain. "And wildfire response, like the 2017 and 2018 massive California wildfires. This is a situation where there needs to be a huge coordination effort. ViPER does exactly that."

ViPER is currently integrated into all Navy submarines. With its potential to significantly reduce planning time, increase efficiency, and reduce errors, ViPER is poised to help all military planning, disaster and first responder planning, and any operation that requires timely and strategic deployment of personnel and assets.
