G&W’s Georgia Central Railway to Serve New Hyundai Electric Vehicle Facility in Savannah Area

Georgia Central Railway, L.P., a subsidiary of Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (G&W), today announced that it will serve a new, dedicated electric vehicle (EV) and battery-manufacturing facility in Bryan County, Georgia, for Hyundai Motor Group. The $5.5 billion project is scheduled to begin commercial production in the first half of 2025, with the Georgia Central providing rail transportation of inbound materials to support production as well as outbound finished vehicles to markets across the U.S.

“We are honored to be forging a partnership with Hyundai to help fulfill their goal of being a leader in electric mobility in the U.S. market,” said Jack Hellmann, CEO of G&W. “Our commitment to safe and efficient rail service, our longstanding presence in Savannah, and Georgia Central’s access to the North American rail network via CSX and Norfolk Southern make us the ideal partner for an EV project that will be transformational for the State of Georgia.”

The state-of-the-art plant will be located at the 2,900-acre Bryan County Megasite and is anticipated to bring 8,100 jobs to the Savannah area.

“This project is testament to longstanding teamwork among G&W, the State of Georgia, local economic development commissions and Class I rail partners to meet customers’ needs and bring new business to the area,” said Michael Miller, president of G&W North America. “We look forward to partnering with Hyundai to help them establish a stable supply chain and build a healthy EV ecosystem in the U.S.”

One of 12 G&W freight railroads serving the state of Georgia, Georgia Central Railway operates over 211 miles from Macon to Savannah.
