SCOTT COUNTY, IOWA PROVIDES NOTICE OF DATA PRIVACY INCIDENT

February 28, 2025 - Iowa. Scott County, Iowa ("Scott County") recently became aware of an incident that may have impacted the privacy of information related to certain individuals.

On July 11, 2024, Scott County became aware of suspicious activity in a Health Department employee's email account. Scott County immediately launched an investigation, with the assistance of third-party forensic specialists to determine the nature and scope of the activity. The investigation determined that an unauthorized user gained access to the email account between July 10 and July 12, 2024. Thereafter, Scott County undertook a comprehensive review of the contents of the email account to assess what information was contained therein, to whom it related, and to find address information for affected individuals. Scott County recently finalized this review.

The types of information potentially impacted by this incident varies by individual but may include name, address, Social Security number, driver's license number, date of birth, health insurance information, and medical information.

Scott County takes the confidentiality, privacy, and security of information in its care very seriously. Upon discovery of the event, Scott County immediately took steps to secure the account, conducted a diligent investigation to confirm the full nature and scope, and conducted a comprehensive review of the information potentially affected. As part of Scott County's ongoing commitment to the privacy of information in its care, Scott County is implementing additional technical security measures and training to strengthen the security of its systems. Scott County is also reviewing and enhancing its existing data privacy policies and procedures. Scott County is notifying regulators, as necessary.

Scott County is not aware of actual or attempted misuse of any information. Scott County encourages individuals to remain vigilant against incidents of identity theft and fraud by reviewing account statements and explanation of benefits and monitoring your free credit reports for suspicious activity and to detect errors over the next 12 to 24 months.
