The Centre for Environmental Research and Engineering - CIA is part of the Faculty of Engineering and was created on March 25th, 1975. Its foundation was a result of the need to respond to issues related to the preservation of the environment, as well as its improvement, the promotion and development of studies related to the methods of measurement and control of pollution and the need for advisory and technical assistance services to resolve specific problems.

Interdisciplinary work in the CIA has evolved over the time from a temporary gathering of a group of professionals from multiple disciplines to a permanent establishment of research and development groups specializing in different areas of knowledge. CIA includes 40 active research groups.

Today, CIA's work has gone beyond the environmental issue as the center has become a promoter of research in all disciplines of engineering.
