CSIR - NATIONAL AEROSPACE LABORATORIES’ mandate is to develop aerospace technologies with strong science content, design and build small and medium –sized civil aircraft, and support all national aerospace programs.

CSIR-NAL activities involve the design, development, manufacturing and certification of small civil aircraft, the only such centre in the country. Major projects completed / in progress include certification of a two seat ab-initio all-composite aircraft HANSA-3 (Fifteen aircraft built so far); a fourteen seat light transport aircraft SARAS, that is presently under development (two prototypes built and test flown; a production standard aircraft with CFC wing under assembly for flight testing and final certification); and the development of a new five seat general aviation aircraft C-NM5 in association with M/s. Mahindra Aerospace Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore, under Mahindra Corporate group. Marking the millstone event for India’s first public-private partnership in aircraft development, the C-NM5 successfully completed its maiden flight at Australia on September 1, 2011.

CSIR-NAL is the lead agency identified by the Government of India for carrying out feasibility study for the development of a National Civil Aircraft (70 & 90 seater for regional connectivity) proposed to be developed during 12th FYP and beyond.

The committed efforts of CSIR-NAL over the last five decades have resulted in achieving expertise and core competencies in many disciplines of Aerospace Technologies. CSIR-NAL has always accepted challenges and delivered products and technologies, and is the preferred destination for mission-mode aerospace programs, which would have been difficult, if not possible, without CSIR-NAL’s contributions; the major aerospace programs of ISRO and DRDO have significant contributions from CSIR-NAL.

CSIR-NAL’s developmental work in strategic areas has helped the country in overcoming the technology-denial regimes and has put the Nation in better bargaining position when import of technology was considered appropriate. Additionally, it has helped to protect confidentiality of strategic data and enhanced its prestige in the international arena.
