At the UMC Utrecht viscoelastic coagulation tests are performed by CDL laboratory staff within the laboratory section of hemostasis and thrombosis. This is often done upon request during cardio-thoracic surgery to monitor the efficiency of blood clotting during surgery. Visco-Elastic coagulation assays provide a complete picture of a patient's hemostasis, and includes information about the formation of a clot, its strength and also its lysis in whole blood. Together, this information is important for management of risks of bleeding or thrombosis. Visco-elastic coagulation testing is currently performed by the CDL using the TEG 5000 systems (Haemonetics, Braintree, MA, USA). However, the current TEG equipment is outdated and will need to be replaced by another visco-elastic coagulation test system.
The final (European) tender is expected to include two visco-elastic coagulation test systems, maintenance, reagents and consumables.
