Patria offers a Finnish remote air traffic control system

Patria is preparing to offer its solution for remote-operated air traffic control system in Finland. The system’s implementation and maintainability are supported by Patria’s technical abilities, the well-functioning collaboration between the company and authorities, and the company’s nationwide maintenance network, which all ensure the availability of the system even during crisis.

In a remote air traffic control system, the overview and functions of a traditional control tower are transferred through cameras and data communication networks to a single place, from which air traffic controllers can operate several airports flexibly and cost-efficiently.

“Aimed at small and medium-sized airports, the system can be installed either as a fixed solution or as a mobile container solution, enabling the use even on roads temporarily used as runways”, says Jonas Geust, President of Patria’s Systems business unit.

The system is based on a product of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, used in Norway, which can operate in the challenging Finnish conditions. The system has been customised by Patria to meet the domestic needs. The highly developed sensors such as thermal cameras ensure the visual awareness for the traffic controller also in the dark and bad weather.

The system offers a cost-efficient alternative for building new air control towers or renovation of the old ones. Additionally, the remote air traffic control enables the airports to be opened also outside the normal service hours if needed thus increasing their vitality and profitability. Technically the system enables offering of the air traffic control to several airports from one workstation enhancing the cost-efficiency even more.

Certain parts of the system are showcased at Patria’s stand at the Turku Airshow on June 15-16, 2019.
