May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month: Let's talk about it. Let's take action.

Dr. Mohiba Tareen at Tareen Dermatology is available for interviews to build awareness and inspire action.

ROSEVILLE, Minn., April 29, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and Tareen Dermatology is calling on communities to take skin health seriously.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by age 70, and more than two people die of skin cancer every hour. Raising awareness about prevention and early detection is more critical than ever. Yet many people don't know where to start.

This May, Tareen Dermatology invites everyone to join the conversation and take the first step toward protecting their skin. Throughout the month on its website and social media channels, Tareen Dermatology's team of experts will share insights into skin cancer prevention and detection:

-- Melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, is expected to affect
over 100,000 people in the U.S. in 2025, based on projections from the
        American Cancer Society.
-- Survival rates are improving, thanks to earlier detection and advances
in treatment. The five-year survival rate for melanoma is 99% when the
cancer is localized and caught early.
-- Common risk factors for skin cancer include multiple sunburns, tanning
bed usage (just one session before age 35 increases melanoma risk by
75%), weakened immune systems, or a personal history of skin cancer.
-- Prevention strategies include applying broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen,
wearing UPF-protective clothing and UV-blocking sunglasses, avoiding
tanning beds, staying in the shade during peak UV hours, and performing
        regular skin checks.

It's not just about facts; it's also about action.
"Everyone is at risk for melanoma and other skin cancers. The key is catching it early, which can be lifesaving," said Dr. Mohiba Tareen, board-certified dermatologist & medical director at Tareen Dermatology.

Dr. Tareen stresses that while early detection is key, ensuring that all communities understand their risk is equally important. "Melanoma affects every skin type. But unfortunately, we've seen how patients with melanin-rich skin can experience delayed diagnoses because the signs are different and sometimes overlooked," says Dr. Tareen. "There's a common misconception that darker skin isn't at risk, but that isn't true. Raising awareness in all communities, providing expertise, and encouraging regular skin checks across all skin tones is essential."
